Dear Friends of Sanctuary House,
North Carolina is facing a Mental Health crisis:
- 1 in 5 families are affected by mental illness
- In the state of NC, the unemployment rate for adults with severe and persistent mental illness is currently 85.4% (NAMI NC). Consequently, serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings every year (NAMI National)
- The cost for psychiatric hospitalization is an estimated $1500 to $2,000 per day.
Sanctuary House has been a leader in Guilford County for the past 16 years helping individuals experiencing mental illness discover that life does not end with a diagnosis of mental illness. In fact, we were recently named 2018 Nonprofit of the Year by the Guilford Nonprofit Consortium.
Sanctuary House’s services extend to our community with major outcomes benefiting our taxpayers by:
- Reducing costly hospitalization rates. Less than 1% of Sanctuary House’s active members experience re-hospitalization.
- Sanctuary House provides a stable environment for approximately 60-75 individuals each day.
- Since July 2018, our members collectively earned $215,000. Since inception, clients of Sanctuary House have earned over 1.4 million dollars in competitive community based wages.
- Currently, we have over 15 different employers
- Of the individuals we serve daily, 36% are employed or are in school, obtaining a certification etc. We’re impacting the 84% unemployment rate of adults with serious mental illness in North Carolina.
- We advocate for over minimum wage.Over 75% of clients are earning over minimum wage.
- We have close to 95% retention rate of clients successfully placed…meaning clients keep their jobs.
- In the past twelve years, there has not been an incident of suicide among the clients who have been in the programs of Sanctuary House.According to national statistics on mortality, mental illness is estimated to be the 10th leading cause of death in Guilford County.
- We have the safety net and resources of other supportive programs of Sanctuary House, this includes our Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Day Programming, Community Based/Personal Care program (in home), Clinical Services and our vocational social-entrepreneurial A Sweet Success! Bakery.
The demand for Sanctuary House’s services to carry out our mission has increased. We are asking you to put mental wellness at the top of your list and make a donation today. Your support is truly appreciated and our members thank you for your kindness and support.
Sincerely,
Jodi Lorenzo-Schibley, Executive Director
